Reading Tasks

This week for reading I did three types of reading tasks.  They were: table mat, making connections and synthesis.

The first thing I did for table mat was write down my prior knowledge, then I wrote down the topic of the book.

Next, I had to find 3 keywords for each box and define one of them that I had chosen.  After I found 4 facts that were written down in the book and wrote them down in the boxes.

Second was my making connections, I did 3 types of connections they were text to self, text to text and text to world.  I had to get 2 things from the book and write it down then connect it to myself.

For the text to text we had to get another 2 things and write it down then connect it to another book that has a similar text.

And then lastly was my synthesis, I did was write down my prior knowledge into the labelled box.  Prior knowledge is your background knowledge or something that you already know.

After, I wrote down my new information which was my facts that I had read from the text of the book.
Then, I went back to read the text and then once I finished reading the book I wrote down What my new understandings were.

Manaiakalani Film Festival

On Wednesday the whole school went to the cinemas in Silvia Park to Manaiakalani Film Festival.

We watched a series of different films that were created by schools like primary and college.  They were all amazing and creative.

Our movie was based off of Covid-19 and some other schools also had movies that were based off of Covid-19.

I have commented on Glen Taylor's Movie.  The movie was about people being ungrateful.

Comment Thread

Today I wrote a comment thread with O'Ninesha.

A comment thread is for practise using open questions in a conversation.  It also gives people an understanding of the activity.

O'Ninesha wrote a comment on my reading task, Table Mat, from last week. After O'Ninesha commented on my blogpost I responded with another comment.

Speech Planning | Writing

This week for writing I tried to memorise my speech and if I couldn't than I could read it off of my device.

First, I had to plan out what I was going to say like brainstorming different ideas of some different topics that we could use in our speech.

My topic for my speech was "Mufti".  I had chosen to do this topic because kids should have the right to express themselves.

Next, I needed a main website to find some facts from.  The facts were to back up my reason for my argument.

After that, I needed a solution and a summary.  The solution was to take away uniforms and letting the kids wear mufti, and the summary was ending the speech in a good way.

Maori Names

This week for Maori I translated Maori names of people into English names.

I matched the Maori names into the English names.  I matched the names that sounded like each other.

Later, I searched the names onto the Maori Dictionary to check if they were correct.

I enjoyed matching the English names into the Maori names because the ones that I didn't know I could learn from.

Basic Facts Boxes

Basic Facts Boxes is an activity that challenges others to solve maths problems of all operations quickly.

There are two challenges within the Basic Facts Boxes: Speed Demon Challenge and Brain Box.  I chose to do up to 20.

Viola Vincent Reporting | SSR Selfie

This week for SSR Selfie I wrote about book called "Viola Vincent Reporting".

The first thing I did was read the book for 15 minutes.  Then I wrote in what title of the book was, next I wrote in who the author and illustrator was.

Then I wrote in who the main characters where and listed three things that happen in the book.  Lastly I wrote about what I thought of the book.

Sharing Knowledge | Maths

This week for maths I had to find a partner and our partner had to talk about what they learnt on their area that they chose and we had to talk about the area that we chose.

My partner Oscar had chosen to do money as an area.  He talked and explained about money, what he had done and what he had learnt from it.

My other partner Siale talked to me about converting measurement.  He talked and also explained about what converting measurement was.

Siale had told me that measurement is finding out the height, width and length of something or and object, he had also told me that.

I believe I am an accurate teacher and I also believe that I was an alright student.

Kiwi Sport

This week we learned how to do two man settle and three man settle.

After playing a game we practised two man settle and three man settle.  To do a two man settle the person (who was named the letter A) had to touch and put the ball under their feet and step under it.

Then the person who was named B had to get the ball and run forward.  It was the same for the two man settle but with three people.

Lastly, we played a game of touch.  We had to walk through the game for the people who didn't know how to play the game.  We used each skill that we had learnt from the past few weeks.

I enjoyed doing this activity, but it was also quite hard to learn it because I have never played that game before.

Shelter Model | Inquiry

This week, our company (Global Savers) brainstormed ideas for an emergency shelter design.

We needed to think of a main shape to design the emergency shelter. We needed to find a main shape because it would be holding everything. We also needed to think about what our shelter will be designed to resist.

My group used a design programme called SketchUp, that allows people to design and create anything they want in three dimensions.

We chose to use a hexagon shape to make this model. Me and my group chose this shape because it seems like a very strong shape.

We made the walls thick so it could keep people inside of it safe.  We would make the shape tall so in case of an emergency we could fit quite a few people in there.

Synthesis | Reading

This week for reading I did my synthesis based around this book called "Just like new".

Synthesis means to bring ideas together, or to make something out of parts that are individual.

The first thing I did was write down my prior knowledge into the labelled box.  Prior knowledge is your background knowledge or something that you already know.

After, I wrote down my new information which was my facts that I had read from the text of the book.

Then, I went back to read the text and then once I finished reading the book I wrote down What my new understandings were.

Tahi | Maori

This week, our session with Whaea Odie was based around translating Maori names into English.

First, I went down to the mat with Whaea Odie.  We learnt the names in maori about in front, behind, left and right

Then, I used the maori dictionary to translate the maori names and to also find out what they were, then I wrote the names in the right boxes.

When I finished the Maori names I went back down with Whaea Odie to mark all if they were right.

Geometry | Maths

Geometry is a kind of mathematics that deals with shapes and figures.  It explains how to build or draw shapes.

2D shapes are shapes with two dimensions, such as width and height. An example of 2D shapes are: triangle, square, trapezoid.

3D shapes are shapes with three dimensions, such as, width, height and depth.  An example of 3D shapes are: cylinder, sphere, square pyramid.

Rotations is when something turns or spins around a point located at its center. Rotation means turning around a center, the distance from the center to any part on the shape stays the same.

Duffy Theatre - Bex Meets Milly

We watched a performance by Duffy theatre group about the Coggen.  A Coggen is a mythical creature that is a mixture of a cat, dog and chicken.

Before the show, the actors introduced themselves.  Then we sang the Duffy song.

Then the actors performed for us.

Lastly, the Duffy group held a question and answer session.

I thought the performance was great, because it was my first time seeing a Duffy theatre.

Making Connections | Reading

This week for reading we did "Making Connections".  Making connections is a reading strategy that helps find the meaning in a text by connecting to my knowledge.

I did 3 types of connections they were text to self, text to text and text to world.  I had to get 2 things from the book and write it down then connect it to myself.

For the text to text we had to get another 2 things and write it down then connect it to another book that has a similar text.

Then text to world was writing down another 2 things from another part of the book and comparing it to some things around the world

Table Mat | Reading

This week for reading I did a table mat based around this book called " Just like new".

The first thing I did was write down my prior knowledge, then I wrote down the topic of the book.

Next, I had to find 3 keywords for each box and define one of them that I had chosen.  After I found 4 facts that were written down in the book and wrote them down in the boxes.

After filling in all of the boxes I wrote down some questions that I would have asked and also some questions that the author would have asked.

LI: To build vocabulary.
