Greek Mythology

Today David shared his reading challenge with us. It is all about the Greek gods and helps us to practise the skills we have been learning in our reading lessons with our teachers.

David created this task as part of his CARE award challenges. We earn CARE award badges in year 7 and 8 to show that we understand our school values. In this activity we used our smart searching skills to find information to help us complete the table.

I found this activity Very educational because I learnt about different types of gods and facts about them

The Greek god I found most interesting was Posiden because he had control over the whole ocean.

Jealousy

LI: To write an abstract noun sentence.

An abstract noun is something that can’t be physically touched, as in a feeling (happiness, fear, love, etc) also the 5 senses. This week, LS2 have been learning about Metaphors and Nouns. We got into groups and were introduced  on what is nouns , what we see in the poem ( the structure) and the 5 senses. Our group created a Metaphor about happiness; Happiness is the blooming rainbow that shines when the sun comes out after the rain. A Metaphor is a comparison of two things without using ‘like’ or ‘as’. We created our own poem as a group about Jealousy.

Inquiry Summary

LI: to explain in fewer words what the text is about

For our Inquiry we were learning about Matariki, and the origin story. Our task was to watch a video on the Maori Creation story and we had to summarise the video. The video was an artist representing and creating the story through sand art.

Our 20 important words had to be the top important words from the video, words that represented the story. Then from the 20 we had to pick the 6 most important words Then using those 6 words we had to sum up the story in a few sentences.

Main Ideas

LI: to identify the main ideas in the text

Our next activity was to continue our learning with Matariki and Maori Stories.

For this activity we talked about the general important ideas, the 4 very important ideas, and the 3 vital ideas of the story.

The important ideas are composed of 4 specific things that might basically summarise the story. The 3 vital ideas are composed of key parts of the story.

Venn Diagram

LI: to find as many similarities and differences as you can between the video and the text of “The Beginning”.

To continue our learning of Matariki, and the Maori story of Creation our task was to create a Venn Diagram. For our Venn Diagram we compared the differences and similarities between the Video and Written Version of the Maori Creation Story.

A Venn Diagram, is a diagram showcasing the differences and similarities between two different things.

Creative Writing

LI: To understand how to use descriptive words to make your writing more interesting.

Our focus for writing this week was to use descriptive writing, which means using words that are powerful, making your text more exciting to read and add more detail into your writing. We were tasked to work collaboratively in pairs to complete this task.

Our task was to describe one of the two pictures that we were given. To make this task easier we would use our prior knowledge of sentence structures, nouns, verbs, adjectives, and descriptive words to create a piece of writing that uses descriptive words to make the text exciting to read.

I found this interesting because I could make up a story about 2 option pictures picture we wanted to do.

Following Classroom Rules & Expectations |PB4L

LI: To follow the rules and expectations, expected from teachers.

This weeks PB4L learning is about following classroom rules and expectations. PB4L is a acronym describing Positive Behavior for Learning.

PB4L helps us understand the correct behavior for inside classroom learning and outer learning. This consist of Classroom discussions, walking to assembly, behaviour on school trips, wet day procedure eg. respecting wet day monitors. All of these prospects will help us develop a strong and healthy learning enviroment.

I found this activity very educational because It showed me all the different types of expectations

Science | TECH

LI: to explore science equipment.

Our task was to measure an exact amount of sugar and dissolve in both hot and cold water to make a solution.

The equipment we used was:

-  A petri dish

- A weighing machine

- Table sugar

- Two 200ml beakers

-  A pipette ( or dropper)

- Spatula

- Thermometer

- Stop watch

The method we used was placing a petri dish on the weighing machine or a scale. Fill the beaker with 100ml  of cold water, measure 10 grams of sugar in the petri dish. Pour the 10 grams of sugar in the 100ml beaker with the water and stir.

we used the stopwatch to see how long the water would take for the hot and cold water to dissolve. Obviously the hot water had more effect than the cold water, and the hot water had made everything sticky.

Current Events

LI: To find the important information in a current event.

LI: To identify the author's purpose.

This week for reading we learnt about the authors purpose. Authors write for a purpose/reason. These reasons are to persuade, inform, explain or entertain (PIE).

First we looked on Kiwi Kids News to find a article. Then, we made a copy of the current events DLO and answered the questons:

  • What is the article about?
  • When the artice was created?
  • Where the article was made?
  • Who created the article?
  • Why the author wrote the article?
  • How it was made?
  • What do you think the author wanted you to learn from the artice?.

I found this activity fun and intresting because it was fun to fill in the questions and the article I picked was intresting to learn about.

Student Leader Conferences

LI: to share our learning with our families

The Student Leader Conference is something I had never done before, so when it was my turn I was quite nervous, until I saw that some of my friends were their, then I felt just a bit more confident.

That's when the conference began, Mrs Anderson had handed me my script and then I showed my parent around workspace 2, since i'm in all of Mrs Fisi'iahi's subject groups.

In the end my mum was really proud of all the work I have done, but I still promised her I would improve in my academics

Samoan Language Week

This week is Samoan Language Week - Vaiaso o le Gagana Samoa. The theme for 2021 is Poupou le lotoifale. Ola manuia le anofale which means strengthen the posts of your house, for all to thrive.

In LS2 we have decided to value the measina of the language by creating a screencastify that teaches others how to use Samoan words and phrases.

My partner and I chose to pay it forward by showing others how to count in samoan which might be something new they have learnt.

I found this challenge really fun since my partner and I got to take turns saying which words. But when it was coming close to the end it got harder with the foods.

LI: To pay it forward by creating a screencastify that teaches others how to use Samoan words and phrases

Cinquain Poem

We have been learning to write cinquain poems to help us strengthen our connections to description. A cinquain poem has 5 lines.

Each line has a different purpose. Line 1 is a noun which is a name. Line 2 has 2 adjectives taht describe the noun.

Line 3 has 3 verbs that end in ‘ing’ and describe the actions. Line 4 is a noun phrase which is a group of words (not a sentence) that go together to describe the noun. Line 5 is a synonym which is a word with a similar meaning to the noun.

I enjoyed this activity because it gave me a chance to find out new Adjectives & Verbs.

LI: To write a cinquain poem to describe a sports star

My Reading Pathway

This week is book week at Panmure Bridge School, which means every class participates in a number of reading activities.

One of our activities was to create a reading pathway that shows how my favourite books have changed over time. At the moment I like reading "As Old As Time, A Twisted Tale"

I really like this book because, I found out many different words and the definitions of them in this book, I just finished reading it the other day and it has about 400 pages worth of learning new words.

LI: To show my personal journey through books
