Statistical Investigation

LI: To plan & carry out a statistical investigation.

For maths, we did a statistical investigation and found out information about LS2 students.


First, we got into pairs and thought about four different questions to ask the LS2 students. Our four questions were ‘What is your birthday month?’, ‘How old are you?’, ‘What is your favourite animal?’ and ‘What is your favourite food?’.


Next, we cut out the answers and stuck them to a large piece of paper to look like a graph. More people had their birthdays in February and June. Less people had their birthdays in December, April and September.


Finally, we looked through the information and data we collected in our statistical investigation and created a pie chart using a google draw.


I enjoyed this activity and performing this statistical investigation. Before carrying out this statistical investigation, I predicted that more people would be born in March, but instead of being right I got it wrong the correct answer was February & June

Sharing Knowledge | Maths

This week for maths I had to find a partner and our partner had to talk about what they learnt on their area that they chose and we had to talk about the area that we chose.

My partner Oscar had chosen to do money as an area.  He talked and explained about money, what he had done and what he had learnt from it.

My other partner Siale talked to me about converting measurement.  He talked and also explained about what converting measurement was.

Siale had told me that measurement is finding out the height, width and length of something or and object, he had also told me that.

I believe I am an accurate teacher and I also believe that I was an alright student.

Geometry | Maths

Geometry is a kind of mathematics that deals with shapes and figures.  It explains how to build or draw shapes.

2D shapes are shapes with two dimensions, such as width and height. An example of 2D shapes are: triangle, square, trapezoid.

3D shapes are shapes with three dimensions, such as, width, height and depth.  An example of 3D shapes are: cylinder, sphere, square pyramid.

Rotations is when something turns or spins around a point located at its center. Rotation means turning around a center, the distance from the center to any part on the shape stays the same.

Areas | Maths

When fashion designers use maths it's mostly used to measure the body, sketching different angles of the clothes etc.

In fashion designing, maths is important.  Fashion designing requires people to be good at: Addition, subtraction, measurement, geometry etc.

Understanding how to use maths can help people with their course in designing.

Rounding

Rounding is a math strategy that uses addition & division strategies. Rounding means making a number easier but keeping its value close to what it was. The answer is less detailed, but easier to use

Addition and division are both operations that are used for rounding. To round, the person needs to find the mean, to find the mean get a set of numbers like 5,7,1,9,3 and then add them altogether which would make 25. Then divide them by the amount of numbers there are which makes 5.

Rounding can help people get better at adding and dividing. Also at understanding how to round numbers in to 1 decimal place.

Static Investigation

Time is a continuing sequence of events happening.


The median is found by organizing a set of numbers from least to greatest and finding the number that falls in the middle, but if there is an even set of numbers, the two numbers are added and then divided by 2. For example: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. The median would be 7.


The mean is found by adding a set of numbers together then dividing the total by how many numbers there are. For example: 7+8+9= 24. 24 divided by 3 is 8. The mean would be 8.


The mode is found by organizing the set of numbers from least to greatest and then finding the number that appears the most. For example: 5, 6, 7, 7, 8. The mode is 7 because 7 appears the most times in the number set.


They measured how long it would take to bounce a basketball 50 times, 5 times each. After they measured the length of their activity, they turned their times into a mean. They also found the median and mode for all of their times.

Clocks

There are 3 kinds of ways or strategies you can use to explain time, 24 hours, digital and analogue.

In 24 hours after 1:00 PM it starts with 13 and goes up to 23.  In the 24 hour clock there is AM and PM, the hour comes first, then the minutes, and next the seconds.  Using AM looks like: 9:30, so it often starts with 0.

In Analogue if the minute hand points at 6 it means 30 minutes has passed, if it is pointing at the 9 45 minutes has passed, analogue can tell how many minutes has or have passed.

In digital time we often read in o'clock, it is also easy to read digital time because we can just read through the numbers!

Solving Strategies | Maths

For this weeks math we tried solving stuff using different strategies.

Some strategies are - splitting numbers,number line & counting backwards.

Splitting numbers are like for example - 38 + 20, you start with the biggest number first then you count down.

Number line is when give a number and add onto it, and counting backwards is a strategies

Maths | Fractions

Fractions are the equal pieces that have been cut from a whole object. There are three different types of fractions: proper, improper and mixed number fractions.

Proper fractions are fractions in which the denominator is bigger than the numerator an example: 3/4 


Improper fractions are fractions that have their denominator less than their numerator an example 7/6 

Mixed number fractions are fractions that have a whole as well as a fraction an example 1 and 2/5.

Fraction & Decimals

Fractions are something that does not contain a whole number, Decimals means number less than one.

These are some fractions, 1/5, 2/8, 8/3, etc.

When using fractions usually you have to solve a problem by making it fair, sharing,same amount each, etc.  


For example if there was 4 people and 3.00 dollars you will need to share it by cents, the right amount it - 0.75. which is 3/4s if you divide each dollar by 4.

The relationship between decimals and fractions are from decimal you can divide the numerator to the denominator.

The Denominator comes from how many pieces, slices, etc, and numerator means how many parts are taken from that object,thing,etc. 

Fractions can be used a lot, usually when you share slices, etc.

About me

Hi. My name is Ariana. I am half Samoan and half Persian.  I am in LS1 at Panmure Bridge School.  I enjoy Singing & Maths.  At home I enjoy riding my quad bike and playing with my family.
